Microsoft is gearing up to launch its latest Windows 11 update, affectionately known as “Moment 5” or the “February 24 Moment.” Set to roll out in the coming weeks, this update promises some significant changes that are well worth watching.
But before we delve into the details of Moment 5, let’s talk about a big shift in Microsoft’s approach. After this update, Microsoft is reverting back to annual updates for Windows 11.
So, what does this mean for you? Essentially, it signifies a move towards more stability and fewer drastic changes to your operating system. It’s time to wave goodbye to the frequent “moment” updates and welcome a more regular schedule.
With that said, let’s look at what Moment 5 has up its sleeve…
A key feature of this update is the enhancement of Windows 11’s built-in accessibility features, making the user experience smoother for those who rely on them.
Voice Access now supports multiple monitors and additional languages, and introduces “voice shortcuts” for custom voice-activated commands. The Narrator feature has been upgraded with the ability to preview new natural voices and can work in tandem with Voice Access for various tasks.
A standout change is the ability to write directly into text boxes using a stylus across the operating system, streamlining the use of digital pens and eliminating the need for a dedicated handwriting panel.
In an unprecedented move, Microsoft is making some in-box apps uninstallable. So, if you don’t see yourself using apps like Edge, Camera, or Photos, you can remove them.
The Windows Search pane is becoming more flexible, allowing third-party search providers like Google or Yahoo to create plugins. This means if you’re not a fan of Bing, you have the option to switch.
The Nearby Share feature (think Apple’s AirDrop) gets an upgrade with “friendly name” support. You can give your PC a more readable name, making file sharing easier. Plus, Windows Spotlight, which showcases Bing’s background of the day, will become the default wallpaper setting.
Copilot is also getting a facelift. It can now be “undocked,” making it more versatile and accessible. You’ll also find the Copilot interface in the Windows ALT+TAB menu for quick access.
Changes are also coming to the Widgets Board. You’ll be able to disable Microsoft News integration, allowing for a widget-only layout if you prefer not to have news headlines on your Widgets Board. Additionally, third-party news services can build plugins to integrate with the Widgets Board, giving users more options.
Notepad will now include a character count feature and an “Edit with Notepad” shortcut in context menus for select file types.
In essence, Moment 5 brings a plethora of improvements and enhancements to Windows 11, making it more user-friendly, versatile, and accessible.
For business owners, these updates could significantly boost productivity and streamline workflows for your team. If you haven’t already transitioned to Windows 11, now’s the time! Need help? We’re just a click away.
